For some silly reason, I thought that leaving the USA might end my battles with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Sadly, I was wrong. A few days ago, I went to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to try to get an Ontario License. They took my NY license, checked their computer, and said it showed that I only had a license since April 2003. Without proof that I had a driver's license for 2 of the last 3 years, I would only get a G2 license. So, we went to the DMV today to get proof of the fact that I've had a license prior to April 2003. For $6, the DMV provided me with a typically useless "Driver Abstract", stating that my license was taken away in September 2002, and given back in April 2003. So, since I couldn't prove that I had my license for more than a month before I had it taken away, this piece of paper was useless to me until after April. They said that I should call Albany to ask them for something else that might have more information. I called them. After getting busy signals for 10 minutes, and waiting on hold for about 5 more, I talked to someone that said that I could get this information for $11, only to be transferred to someone else who told me that this wasn't possible, because this information simply wasn't kept. So, I guess I keep the NY license for now. |
