I went grocery shopping today. I picked up, among other things, pre-sliced, packaged portabello mushrooms. The clerk started ringing up my things. When she got to the mushrooms, she tried to scan them. They wouldn't scan. She asked me if I remembered how much they cost, I said I didn't, but I'd be happy to go back and find out. She told me not to worry about it. She asked me what they were. I explained, as the gigantic black and gold sticker on the package screamed, they're portabello mushrooms. She looked in her little produce book. She said we were going to ring them up as "brown mushrooms", because see, and she pointed to the cap, they have some brown on them. She plopped them on the scale, and weighed them, along with the package they were in, and charged me $7.00. If it wasn't for the fact that I really wanted the mushrooms, and that the person in front of me took 10 minutes to check out between writing a check and having they bring her a carton of cigarettes...and the guy before HER sat waiting for HER to be checked out because the clerk rung up his purchase (non -alcoholic beer. Blech) and just forgot to give him his change..yes, had it not been for all these things I might have argued..or just told her to forget the mushrooms. But, I got my mushrooms. I'm glad I did. They were delicious. |
